Ghost in the Shell (2017) Review

I went to Reading Cinemas, Rhodes the other week to watch Ghost in the Shell as well as to grab some dinner. Overall it was a nice movie- quite different from any others that I've seen, with interesting cinematography and animations. With this said, it was still personally an average movie.

Film Analysis

The movie is an American science fiction action film based on the 1995 Japanese manga of the same name. Based in Japan, it is set in the future, with humans and robots living alongside each other, almost to the point of them being indistinguishable. The music, action and visual effects especially were quite impressive, with the life-like robots and animations looking so real and intriguing.

Ghost In The Shell Movie Cover

Scarlett Johansson stars as the lead character, the Major. The Major is a "synthetic "full-body prosthesis" augmented-cybernetic human" who is employed by the Japanese National Public Safety Commission as a field commander. Once human, she has now become a robot. The character senses a great deal of loneliness in the world she lives in.

  • Everyone around me, they feel connected to something. Connected to something, I'm not. - The Major

Although she is to some extent being controlled by the people that created her, she eventually learns more about her past and begins to make a bit more sense of her life and where she stands. Her sense of independence and rebellion is shown when Major states, "They created me. But they can not control me".

The plot has several twists however a lot of them are rather predictable and the storyline felt a bit incomplete once the movie ended. Despite the great storytelling momentum and visual excitement, more depth to the storyline would have greatly improved this movie.  As I stated previously, I did enjoy this movie, however it did feel like it was lacking a few things.

I would recommend this movie as it is rather different from other films in terms of the setting and the animations, however, with the overall storyline being rather predictable, you could save your money and watch it later on… I enjoy going to the cinemas just for the experience, so I would recommend watching this at the cinemas if you have the time.

RATING: 3/5 STARS
